Songs of Travel SOT is a transnational project which will use music to raise awareness and create empathy towards climate change and migration and which will develop and implement a sustainable model of operation for specialised classical music festivals. SOT will also improve access to and circulation of contemporary classical music. 4 classical music festivals from Holland, Ireland, Norway and Sweden and an Austrian boutique game development studio are partnering to co-commission and present 5 works of contemporary classical music by composers connected with migration, one of which will form the soundtrack to a new interactive, adventure game, Songs of Travel, charting 5 stories of migrants fleeing troubled homelands to new beginnings in Europe. The festivals will address sustainability from an ecological perspective by developing and implementing a green policy; and from an artistic perspective by ensuring longevity for the new compositions. Research will be conducted into attitudes towards sustainability amongst stakeholders in the music world. An education resource will be created to support engagement with contemporary classical music and to highlight themes of migration and social inclusion. Young people from 7 to 18, adults from 18 to 80, migrants, performers, composers, music teachers and audiences of other music organisations will benefit from SOT and numbers reached will be 67000. The outputs will be 5 musical scores, 4 SOT festival strands, 1 interactive game, 1 education resource, 1 report on sustainability research and 1 green policy for classical music festivals. The results of SOT will be increased awareness and empathy towards climate change and migration, increased longevity for new works of music, sustainable models for music festivals and raised profiles of the cultural heritage of migrants. SOT aligns with the Work Programme's objective of transnational creation and circulation and the priorities of sustainability and social inclusion.
